Hba Card

Bad HBA Card?

Recently I had a contractor come in to move a Egenera cabinet 180 degrees. While doing this we had to pull up the power cables and then relay them down.. This was done gently however around the same time we powered on the Egenera a sun server in the cabinet next to the Egenera started to have problems with one HBA card. Initially it was thought that during the Egenera move one of the fiber cables had broke. But after swapping out various fiber cables and various ports on the SAN it appears to be the HBA card. The card still acts like it is seeing something at the far end when it is plugged into the SAN but the SAN does not see the card. Does anyone have an ideas about what caused this? Right now this is just for my own info.

Step 0, which you've probably already done, is to make sure the fiber connectors are tightly in place. You might also inspect the fiber to see if it looks crushed, kinked or nicked anywhere along its length.

There are relatively low cost testers that let you check out the health of a fiber. If you have many fibers, you probably should have a test set available to you. To properly shop for a test set, you need to know what kind of signals your fibers are carrying as well as what kind of connectors they have on them.

If you have another HBA card, perhaps on another Sun server, you perhaps could try moving the fiber from the troubled card to the other one. If the problem comes along when you move the fiber, then it would seem the problem is in the fiber. Be careful as you experiment to make sure you don't damage the fiber when you move it to the other card or do anything to addle the SAN content during your experiment. Mounting the disks read only is probably the safe thing to do.

Usually the transmit and receive are on seperate strands of glass (or plastic), so if the HBA sees the SAN, but not vice-versa, perhaps only one fiber in the pair got damaged.
