LAN - A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a local area like a home, office or group of buildings near each other. Current LANs are most likely to be based on IEEE 802.3 Ethernet switch, or Wi-Fi technology used in the 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps.
In general, a peripheral LAN is made up of geographical proximity to another and have finite limitations. The LAN may be wired or wireless, but only in one place.
WAN - A Wide Area Network or WAN is a computer network covering a wide geographical area. Contrast with the Personal Area Network (PAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN) or local area network (LAN) which are generally limited to a room, building or campus. The best known example, and instead of a WAN is the Internet.
A network (WAN) consists of multiple LANs interconnected across large distances. And the example is a business office related to each of its offices satellites. This method of interconnection is provided by a third company - Qwest offers cable that connects two parts together.
WANs are used to connect local area networks (LAN) and so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. Many WANs are built by a particular organization and are private. Others, built by Internet service providers, connections LAN provide organization to the Internet. WANs are often built using leased lines. At each end of a leased line, a router connects to the LAN on one side and a center within the WAN on the other. Leased lines can be very expensive. Instead of using leased lines, WANs can also be manufactured using less expensive or the circuit switching packet switching methods. Protocols network such as TCP provide transport and processing functions. Protocols, including packet over SONET / SDH, MPLS, ATM and Frame Relay are often used by providers services to provide the links used in WANs.
