Server Piii

Difference between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xbuntu & eduntu.?

Hi,

I am new to linux secene and my company is keen to use linux and ditch windows. I was told by my friend that unbuntu was good. But, i was confused when i went to the website.

We need OS for Centrino laptops, PIV desktop & 3 servers, so can i use unbuntu? or should also use kubuntu for server? what is the diff anyways between these two?

We also have PIII & PII machines running windows 98, so we will need a low end linux,so is xbuntu good or can use ubuntu itself? Pls note that my company isn't keen to spend too much on training. Orelse they will be back to windows itself.

So, pls help me,by giving a simple comparision of all these flavours for us to decide which suits us best.

Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu and Edubuntu both use the Gnome desktop GUI. Edubuntu comes pre-configured with educational programs. These GUI's are more MACOS-like.

Kubuntu use the KDE desktop GUI. This GUI is more Windows-like.

Xubuntu uses the XFCE desktop GUI.

Run Xubuntu on the PIII's. Dump the PII's.

There is no difference between the underlying OS, only the desktop is changed. However, there is an Ubuntu server edition:

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/serveredition

This will be better for the servers as the others are not really configured for server use.

The amount of training needed will depend on what you want to run on the servers. If you want a simple file/print server, no problem. If you want that plus firewall, proxy server, web server, MySQL server, it will be more expensive.

A little training expense now will save you a lot of maintenance expense in the future.
