Network my house, any ideas?
Hi, im interested in networking my house so I can stream media from my PC to various rooms in the house, etc. I was thinking of just running Cat5 cable under the floors and connecting it that way, but don't really want loose ends knocking about behind the television in my living room, id prefer to have some sort of socket on the wall and just use a patch cable between the socket and whatever device im going to use, can anyone give me an idea as to what socket I can get to fix in the wall?? is there any such thing as an RJ45 socket for wall mounting?? any other ideas would be appreciated.

This particular link is for a 10-pack, but you can buy them in smaller amounts. They also come in different colors, with black, white, and almond being the most common. Look for a kit that comes with the handy tool you'll need in order to punch the 8-wires in the Cat5 cable into this port. Near where you'll find these ends, you'll also find the decora wall plates that they snap into. These plates look just like a typical receptical plate you have everywhere you have an electric outlet in your home. They even make plates that have a combination of RJ45 jacks and other types of outlets if you want to gang those items together.
If you don't want to punch a hole in the wall in order to recess the outlet box, you can also find surface-mounted decorative boxes that you can mount directly to your drywall. What you would do is punch a hole big enough to pull the Cat5 cable through then mount the decorative box over the hole so it no longer shows. Punch the Cat5 cable into one of the RJ45 sockets and then click the socket into the wall plate. Finally, mount the plate onto the decorative box and you will have an unobtrusive set of jacks mounted on your wall.
If you install these well, you can have a nice, clean look without all the loose wires you are concerned about. You can then use a standard patch cable to run from the wall jack to your electronic devices.
