How do I get a hidden wireless router be recognised by my pcmcia adaptor and not to have to type theSSID again

I have a notebook adaptor which cannot store the SSID of my router and every time I turn on the laptop I have to type in the name of the hidden router plus the wep entryption. any idea how to get around this annoying exercise over and over again?

You're probably better off turning SSID broadcasting on and enabling WPA if the router supports it.

WEP encryption, as I'm sure you've heard, is very weak, and almost not worth using, although it's better than nothing. However, most contemporary wireless routers support WPA-PSK (and TKIP), and it's not very difficult to configure. *IF* you use a strong key and keep it secure, WPA-PSK can give you VERY strong security for your wireless connection. For further information, I highly recommend Steve Gibson's website, specifically his SecurityNow! podcasts; pay particular attention to episodes 10, 11, and 13. (I'll include the link below...)

As far as the SSID broadcasting, turning it off has always been recommended "to increase security," but it really doesn't provide you with any extra security, only a false sense of security. Here's why: the SSID is broadcast in the header of every packet sent out by an associated device, that's what identifies the packet to the AP as being a packet it needs to listen to and process. Anyone listening can pick up your SSID as soon as there's any kind of activity over the wireless connection, so there's not much point in disabling it. Besides, if you're using Windows to manage your wireless connection, the Zero Configuration Wireless service depends upon being able to pick up the SSID beacon.
